Alyson from Sugar and Bash here, and I’m excited to share the perfect sized stocking stuffers for this holiday season! Every Christmas, my mom and sister put lip balm on their wish list and I just grab some store-bought kind and hope they like it. This year I wanted to switch it up a bit so I made my own and included a lip scrub to go with! Lip balm is surprisingly easy to make and with so many flavors, the possibilities are endless, you guys! Since they are all about tropical scents and coconut, I made a citrus ombre set with grapefruit and sweet orange, and a vanilla sugar scrub. Using unrefined coconut oil is a great way to also add a hint of coconut without overpowering your citrus scents.
Shea Butter
Unrefined Coconut Oil
Shea Butter
Beeswax Pellets or Shaved Beeswax
Essentials Oils (I used sweet orange and grapefruit)
Lipstick Shavings, to add colour if desired
Small Containers (I got mine here)
1/ Fill up two glass bowls with 1 tablespoon of each of the following: shea butter, beeswax, and coconut oil. One bowl will become the sweet orange flavor and the other is for the grapefruit version. Note: because the grapefruit essential oil is clear, I added in a tiny shaving of pink lipstick. The sweet orange has a nice pale orange tint, so the colors complement each other very well when blending.
2/ Microwave the mixtures on high, checking every 30 seconds until everything has melted.
4/ Add in the essential oils, about 15 drops. This amount is perfect if you want those coconut undertones for your balm. If you’d like it sweeter, you can add another 10 drops.
5/ With a spoon, fill up each container about halfway with the grapefruit mixture. Fill up the rest of the container with the sweet orange mixture. The colors blend best if done quickly before the oil starts hardening. You can also use a toothpick and swirl the colors together, for a marbled effect.
6/ Pop in the freezer to harden for 5 minutes and they are good to start stuffing in those stockings!
White Sugar
Unrefined Coconut Oil
Vanilla Bean
Small Containers (I got mine here)
1/ Melt about 2 tablespoons of coconut oil in the microwave and add to a bowl filled with 4 tablespoons of white sugar.
2/ Blend with your hands, adding oil or sugar as needed to get the consistency you desire.
3/ With a knife, split the vanilla bean in half, lengthwise, and scrape the inside right into the mixture and blend.
4/ Mix and pack into little containers.
And just like that you have homemade gifts for your friends and family. You can literally make hundreds of these in a day, they’re so easy. I hope everyone has a great holiday!
