When it comes to picking out toys for kids, I want to focus on the ones that bring true joy – the ones I see my daughter and her friends reaching for time and again. Toys kids will actually play with. These are the toys that have stood the test of time in our home, sparking their creativity and keeping them engaged without losing their appeal after the first few days. I’ve put together this guide with toys specifically for children up to around age 8, as that’s the age range I know best right now.
*note: if you only get the baby-loving kid in your life one thing please let it be this doll. It is hands down the most used toy in our home. 10/10. major fan all around.

Each item here is thoughtfully chosen because it’s something I’ve seen kids actually play with, over and over. Whether it’s a beautifully crafted doll, a set of building blocks that lets their imaginations soar, or a fun art kit, these are the toys that go beyond a momentary thrill. They’re durable, encourage open-ended play, and have that magic quality that keeps kids coming back for more. My goal with this guide is to help you find gifts that bring joy, without creating clutter or ending up forgotten in a toy box.
If you’re shopping for kids this season, I hope this list of tried-and-true favourites inspires you to find something meaningful for the little ones in your life.
